The two statues are on opposite sides of the balcony above the center door of the cathedral's west front. Synagoga on the right wears the breastplate of Aaron and points with her right hand to the two tablets of the Mosaic Law in her left arm, which correspond to the Cross on the other side. Ecclesia has a more open stance: torch raised, left foot forward, left hand resting easily on the cross. The difference between the openness of Ecclesia's stance and the closed-in quality of Synagoga's is further expressed in their clothing. Ecclesia's hair and arms are uncovered, whereas Synagoga's sleeves cover her arms down to the wrists, her palla is pulled up over her hair, her forehead is covered by a tall ribbed band, and no foot is visible.
